America is our only real defence guarantee.
So when they ask allies to help stabilise a critical global shipping lane, the adult response from Canberra should be obvious.
Stand with the alliance.
At least send one ship.
Instead, we signal that Australia wants the protection of the alliance, but none of the responsibility.
And in a world becoming more dangerous by the week, that’s a very risky message to send.
Because if we manage to alienate our allies and provoke our enemies at the same time…
Australia won’t just look foolish.
